1792 Bourbon Small Batch Tasting Notes
Nose: A rich and complex bouquet opens with prominent oak staves and a bold rye spice presence, complemented by fresh herbal and grassy notes. Spicy caramel and smooth vanilla lend a warm sweetness, balanced by invigorating hints of fresh mint. Undertones of young leather evoke the scent of a brand-new leather chair, while subtle fruit accents melon and dried apples add depth. A slight astringency emerges but does not detract from the overall aromatic appeal.
Palate: The first sip reveals a bright and lively profile, a refreshing characteristic uncommon among many bourbons. Minty and floral notes intertwine with grassy undertones, leading into layers of toasted oak and deep caramel richness. Dark chocolate adds a velvety bitterness, while a vibrant fruitiness reminiscent of dried tropical fruits and fruit-flavored hard candies (such as Jolly Ranchers) enhances the complexity. A gentle touch of clove introduces a warming spice. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied, offering a satisfying balance of creaminess and oiliness that coats the palate beautifully.
Finish: The experience concludes with a fairly long and evolving finish. Notes of Andes chocolate mints provide a cooling contrast, seamlessly blending with lingering hints of stone fruits, melon, and caramel. A rustic, slightly earthy vanilla rounds out the final impression, leaving a well-balanced and memorable aftertaste.
Overall
Super solid, unique, and eminently drinkable. The flavor profile is distinctly 1792. Barton, like Buffalo Trace, doesn’t publish their mashbill, but it’s believed that they use about 15% rye in their standard bourbon recipe, which is pretty middle of the road rye content. But that 15% rye really shines. Lots of fresh rye notes, with the floral and minty aspects really working well here. In terms of profile, small batch 1792 bourbon most closely reminds me of Buffalo Trace bourbon, but better. Seriously better.
One of the absolute best values in the whiskey world right now, and it’s easy to find. Hopefully it stays that way. This makes for a terrific daily pour.
